Chapter Seventeen

Halloween falls on a Wednesday, exactly four days after Erin kissed me. And I kissed her back. After my sobfest in the stairwell I made it back upstairs to the party where I pounded a berry hard seltzer and fell asleep in an armchair still wearing my dress. I woke up with a stiff neck and a headache worthy of its own zip code.

No one else was awake, so I quietly stacked empty seltzer and beer cans in the recycling bin before sneaking out the door with my bag in search of a breakfast sandwich, Coke, and hash browns from McDonalds. Once the greasy breakfast had eliminated my hangover, I texted Georgia an offer to come back if she needed help with anything, but she and Owen had things handled.

My pathetic attempt at a Halloween costume is a pair of cat ears on a headband, black tights and a black dress, and whiskers drawn on with eyeliner. My friends have much more elaborate costumes. Scott is dressed as a trash fire and wearing a garbage bag with fake flames attached. Georgia is wearing a Superman outfit and Owen, who is back in school for good, is dressed as Wonder Woman. Liz and Rob might have only been a couple for five minutes, but they kill us all by dressing up as Sally and Jack Skellington from The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Even Erin is wearing a costume. I shouldn’t be surprised, after all she participated in Spirit Week last week and the image of her dressed as a giraffe has haunted my dreams four nights in a row. Though now I suspect Erin dressed as a mobster will haunt my dreams forever. Her black knit hat has been replaced by a black fedora and it works on her.

When everyone from the station gathers that night to hit a Halloween carnival at the big park in the middle of Oak Bluffs, I try not to stare at her fitted black shirt and white suspenders and white tie.

But I can’t stop.

“Something catch your eye?” Scott asks. He’s holding hands with Jordan who is dressed as Pennywise.

“Holy fuck,” I say taking Jordan in. “You’re giving me the creeps.”

Jordan laughs. “Sorry. If it makes you feel any better, I’m terrified of looking in the mirror.”

“Who knew I was into scary clowns?” Scott asks.

I wipe a smear of white face paint from his cheek. “You are a scary clown.”

“I’m always down to clown,” he says. He raises an eyebrow and nods at Erin who’s deep in conversation with Liz. “What’s up?”

“Nothing,” I lie. My whiskers can’t hide the pink blossoming on my cheeks.

“Bullshit,” he coughs into his free fist. “She keeps sneaking glances at you, too…”

I shake my head. “Whatever.”

Scott’s smile grows wider. “I think she wants to make you purr,” he says and rolls the r’s.

“Stop,” I say slugging his shoulder.

“What?” he says, dropping Jordan’s hand. “I could have said she wanted to pet a pussycat tonight.”

I glare at him. “You’re the worst.” I point at Jordan whose shoulders are shaking with laughter.
